Reed Strength Comparison Chart

As a clarinet or saxophone player, questions quickly arise about the comparability between various suppliers’ reeds and their respective strengths.

Apart from the market's leading suppliers, Vandoren and D'Addario, there are many smaller reed manufacturers such as PL Leuthner, Pilgerstorfer, AW, BW, Arundos, Steuer and others. Because most suppliers also offer several models each, there is a confusing amount of options to choose from.

Due to the fact that each model can be bought in various strengths, chaos ensues about which reed to buy. Furthermore, because there is no standardised strength classification, an effective comparison is virtually impossible since a 2,5 reed from manufacturer A does not necessarily have the same strength as a 2,5 reed from manufacturer B.

The comparison chart below shows the strength classifications of the saxophone reeds we sell.
